Coaching is not psychotherapy
Coaching is a goal-focused service and is not a substitute for mental-health treatment, diagnosis, crisis care, or psychotherapy. Coaching may not be appropriate when a person is experiencing significant mental-health symptoms or safety concerns. We explain the differences before any service begins.
Questions people ask
- What is relationship coaching?
- Relationship coaching is goal-focused, forward-looking support that helps individuals or couples build communication skills, clarify expectations, and take intentional action.
- How is coaching different from couples therapy?
- Coaching is goal-focused skill building. It does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions, is not clinical care, and is not billed to insurance. Couples therapy is psychotherapy provided by a licensed clinician.
- Which one is right for us?
- If there are significant mental-health symptoms, trauma, or safety concerns, therapy is the appropriate service. We help you decide before anything begins.
- Is relationship coaching covered by insurance?
- No. Coaching is not a clinical service and is not billed to insurance.
- Can I do relationship coaching individually?
- Yes. Many clients work on communication, boundaries, and relationship patterns on their own before or instead of joint sessions.
- How long does relationship coaching last?
- Coaching is typically short-term and goal-bounded, often a defined series of sessions with review points rather than open-ended work.
- How often are coaching sessions?
- Most clients meet every one to two weeks so there is time to practice between sessions.
- Are coaching sessions online?
- Yes. Coaching is delivered virtually.
- Do state licensing limits apply to coaching?
- Coaching is not a licensed clinical service, so it is not restricted the same way therapy is. If the work becomes clinical in nature, we transition you to therapy.
- What happens in a relationship coaching session?
- Sessions define goals, review what happened since last time, practice specific communication or repair skills, and set concrete actions for the week ahead.
- Is relationship coaching confidential?
- Coaching conversations are treated as private, though coaching does not carry the same legal protections as psychotherapy. This is explained in your coaching agreement.
- Can coaching help if we are not in crisis?
- Yes. Many couples use coaching preventively, to strengthen communication and intentional connection habits before problems escalate.
- Can we switch from coaching to therapy?
- Yes. If clinical needs emerge, we will say so directly and help you move into therapy with a licensed clinician.
- Do you provide diagnoses or clinical records for coaching?
- No. Coaching does not include diagnosis, treatment, or clinical documentation.
- How do we start relationship coaching?
- Use the Start Here page or call the office and ask about coaching. We review fit and explain the differences before anything begins.
You don't have to carry it all alone.
